What is domain masking?

Domain masking, also known as URL masking, is the practice of hiding a website's actual domain name from the URL field of a user's web browser and replacing it with another name. Once masked, the URL displays the mask rather than the original domain name. Masking does not affect the content of the actual website; it only covers up the original domain name.

If you want to use a custom domain, you will need to purchase a domain name from a domain name registrar.

In this article, you will find steps on how you can mask the domain of your Oddle Shop.

1. Purchase a domain name

We recommend that you purchase a domain name from one of the following domain name registrars:

These domain name registrars also offer hosting services for your domains. This is important for the next step. If you choose to register your domain name with a registrar not on this list, be sure to research their respective DNS hosting service providers.

2. Host the domain

If you have registered your domain name with one of the aforementioned domain registrars, you can proceed to host your domain name with your domain hosting service provider. However, if you have not done so, you need to check to see if your domain registrar also provides domain hosting services. You can do this in one of three ways:

  • Check your domain registrar's website.

  • Send an email to your domain registrar.

  • Check the name server associated with the domain name and the hosting provider for that name server.

Once you have determined your domain registrar's hosting services, sign up with the hosting service provider for your domain name.

3. Point the new domain to your Oddle Shop's domain

  1. Log in to your DNS hosting provider's site.

  2. Navigate to the DNS Management page.

  3. Add a new CNAME record that points to sni.oddleapp.com.

To permanently redirect customers who type in merchant.com to www.merchant.com, consider using a 301 redirect. This type of redirect sends site visitors and search engines to a different URL than the one they originally typed into their browser or selected from a search engine results page. Contact your DNS hosting provider to perform a 301 redirect.

4. Add your custom domain to the Oddle Dashboard

  1. Sign in to the Oddle Dashboard.

  2. Go to Channels > Online Shop > Settings.

  3. Navigate to Domain Settings.

  4. Enter your custom domain in the "Website URL" field.

  5. Click Save.

Make sure that the domain you enter in the dashboard, as shown above, matches the one registered at your DNS provider's site exactly.

Once the settings have been updated on both the Oddle and Domain Provider sites, it may take up to 48 hours for the new settings to propagate to the entire internet. After that, the site will be secured with an SSL certificate generated by Oddle.
